2016 MATCH REPORTS

There was no shortage of goals or drama for Hamilton Accies in the highland capital, as they finally began life in the new Scottish Women’s Premier League 2 with a 5-3 win over Inverness City.

Manager Gary Doctor watched on as goals from Marie Terese McGuinness, Lori Gardner, Gillian Inglis and Mhairi Lyle sealed the win for Hamilton despite a Natalie Bodiam hat-trick, but he admitted there are still things to be worked on.

“It’s been a big build up to it, and also very tricky, just happy to come up and get the win, that’s the most important thing.

“I think we’re disappointed in the level of performance because I think we’ve set higher standards this year, we’re expecting more from ourselves and the girls so it was a surprise that we didn’t play as well as we would like, but we scored five and could have probably scored twice as many so for as much as we’re disappointed there was still that level of performance.

“This league will be difficult for us, every game is going to be tight.

“I think we should have won that game by a clearer margin, no doubt about it, but we gave away some fairly sloppy goals and we didn’t punish them as much as we should have so the margin of victory should’ve been a lot wider, but I suppose we’re still at the beginning of a journey for the whole season, integrating a lot of new players, and finding out a lot about ourselves and each other.”

It only took four minutes for Accies to open their SWPL2 account, as McGuinness slotted in from close range to give the visitors a dream start, but the hosts pulled it back to even terms only seven later, as Bodium looped her effort into the top near corner on the end of a long free-kick into the box from the halfway line.

Gardner restored Accies’ lead with ease as McGuinness turned provider, nodding in the tight cross from right in front of goal on the 17th.

Hamilton thought they had stretched their lead further as Megan Quinn held her run to set up Gardner, but celebrations were short lived as the assistant flagged for offside.

The visitors took the 2-1 lead into the second period, but the first of the half again came early, with Inverness drawing it back again with Bodiam knocking in following build up through the middle.

But less than a minute later the referee’s assistant shouted for an Accies penalty as City looked to have handled in the box, seeing Inglis score from the spot on the 51st. Inglis finished her brace just before the hour mark as she fought off pressure in the box to bundle the ball over the line despite being brought down and tangled in between the two centre halves on the goal line.

New signings continued to make their mark as Katie Jaycock was fed in down the right, before cutting it back for Mhairi Lyle to find Hamilton’s fifth.

And on the stroke of full-time, Inverness had the last word with Bodiam completing her hat-trick with a high strike crossing Murren Stevenson and finding the net, but the points were headed back down to Hamilton as the new SWPL2 finally got underway ahead of Accies hosting Jeanfield Swifts at New Douglas Park next Sunday.

The 2016 season finally found its way to New Douglas Park, but the long wait was worth it as Hamilton put four past Jeanfield Swifts with no reply.
Goals from Gillian Inglis, Lori Gardner and Marie Terese McGuinness ensured all three points for Accies as they moved to the top of the table ahead of the Perth side.
Bobby Watson said after the game he was delighted to see such a positive start to their home campaign.
"We've been building up to this all preseason to make sure we got a good positive start at home, and I'm glad we done so."
"We played better today than we did last week in Inverness and I don't think many players would argue with that, Jeanfield are a really well organised side, they won 5-1 last week, so it was important that our levels were high to combat that early on, so I'm really happy with that."
Inglis opened the scoring in the first ten minutes bundling the ball over the line after keeper Corrie McIlravey-Davidson failed to deal with Gardner's low cross.
And it didn't take the hosts long to double their lead.
Laura Gallen looked to pick out Inglis in the box but was met by Jade McDonald who sent it straight back out the midfielder, giving Gallen time to place it right in front of goal for Gardner to calmly let it bounce in off her on the 17th.
It was three for Accies as McGuinness got her third in as many games as she won the ball in the middle from a McIlravey-Davidson kick to storm up the park and cooly sending her left footed effort into the roof of the net with five before the break.
The second period saw more of the same from Hamilton with their attacking intent clear with McGuinness sending her strike across goal, Gallen finding herself wrong footed in a great position, and Gardner causing the Swifts defence problems.
Hamilton eventually got the breakthrough in the second half with twenty to go, Gardner again on target, whipping the ball into the top near corner from the corner of the box.
Gardner had numerous opportunities to grab her first Accies hat-trick, the clearest coming in the 86th from a brilliant through ball from Amie McGill seeing Gardner connect with the woodwork again, but her brace was enough with Inglis and McGuinness' goals to collect all three points and go top of the table.

Hamilton Accies continued their 100% start to life in SWPL2 with a more than convincing victory away to Queen’s Park, leaving with a runaway 10-1 win.

Lori Gardner picked up her first Hamilton hat-trick as Lauren Kerr opened her Accies account with a double following her first start for the club, and goals from Gillian Inglis, MT McGuinness, Amie McGill, Laura Gallen and a Lauren Kelly own goal wrapped up the points for Accies despite Ashley McKeown pulling one back at 2-1.

Manager Gary Doctor was delighted to see Hamilton fulfil the potential they’ve shown they are capable of.

“We’ve spent the last couple of weeks improving our efficiency in the final third and getting shots on target was really the big thing, making sure we hit the target more often, because I think we’ve threatened to score this many goals or even more in previous games against Inverness and Jeanfield.

“Today bore fruit from some of the stuff we worked on, still missed a few but we were certainly more efficient today, and I think that grew some confidence in a couple of the goals later in the game.”

Accies got out the traps quickly as Gardner put away her first from the corner before Inglis’ cooly rolled her shot across Lauren Bullock and in from the edge of the box to grab a two goal advantage with only eight minutes on the clock.

The hosts responded though despite Accies’ continued pressure and pulled one back as McKeown caught onto the defence splitting pass before fighting off pressure from McGill and Amy Lindsay to knock it over onrushing Elaine Fleming.

Hamilton restored their two goal cushion through Queen’s defender Kelly whose clearance of Megan Quinn’s cross found net with five until the break.

And into injury time McGuinness kept her 100% scoring record for Accies intact, knocking in Gallen’s cross into the bottom corner.

Accies started the second half as they meant to go on, as Kerr opened her Accies account a minute into the second period, finishing into the open goal after Inglis drew Bullock out before picking out Kerr in front of goal.

The sixth came after great build up play from the visitors as a great long switch from McGill to Inglis saw McGuinness in, and keeper Bullock came to her feet only to deny McGuinness, as Gardner capitalised on the keeper’s mistake to grab her second.

On the 57th, defender McGill got in on the action with an outstanding strike from distance spinning over Bullock for Accies’ seventh.

Twenty minutes later the eighth came again through Kerr, who simply side footed it in from close range following a Sam McPherson corner.

Gardner completed her hat-trick calmly after latching onto Mhairi Lyle’s pass in the area to roll it past Bullock, and Gallen soon made it double figures winding her effort into the top far corner from the outside of her right foot.

Two first half goals were enough for Hamilton Accies Women to continue their 100% record in the SWPL2, running out 2-0 winners over a physical Glasgow Girls.

MT McGuinness and Gillian Inglis ensured their scoring streak continued in all four league games so far this season as manager Gary Doctor said he was happy to see his side see out their toughest league game yet.
He said: "we're really pleased to get another win and certainly Glasgow gave us a really tough and physical game, as we expected, and it was a step up from previous games.
"They caused us plenty of problems, as they are a good team, however I felt we defended fairly well and took the chances we got.
"We've emphasised to the players the importance of being more efficient in front of goal and that has certainly helped us in this game. We know we can play better as we couldn't really get any rhythm in our play but the girls made sure they stayed competitive and didn't give anything away despite not creating a lot, particularly in the second half.
"As for next week, Hearts are unbeaten as well and this will be another really difficult game.
"I think the teams are well matched and although we got the upper hand in the games last year plenty has changed since then.
"We have been doing well at NDP, but if we are to win we have to play better than we did on Sunday as they have some dangerous players.
"The squad has done well this year but it's still early in the season and we just have to focus on this game and perform like we are capable of."
It only took Accies twelve minutes to break the deadlock after McGuinness connected with Megan Quinn's inswinger to knock in for the first before Inglis doubled the score capitalising on a defensive error at close range.
Up next for Accies are second placed Hearts at NDP this Sunday, 4pm kickoff.

A sublime strike from MT McGuiness after doubles from Lori Gardiner and Gill Inglis saw Accies return to winning ways after back to back defeats in the league.

Gary Doctor's side only saw one change from the Scottish Cup defeat to Hearts last week with Captain Gill Inglis coming back into the starting line up.

McGuiness was on fire as she first found Gardiner at the back post for the striker to cooly lift it into the roof of the net from close range on 20 minutes before crossing for Inglis to smash a left foot volley to make it 2 just 4 minutes later.

Hamilton dominated the first period and always looked dangerous on the counter attack, and it was no surprise when Accies extended their lead.

Gardiner effectively put the game to bed connecting with another McGuiness cross to smartly fire across Lessells in the Hutchie goal to make it 3.

Hutchie rallied towards the end of the first half hitting their first just on the stroke of half time with a well placed drive in Fleming's top corner but any hopes of a come back though were dashed on 67 minutes.

McGuiness got free on the left after a switch of play and her cross found the outstretched hand of the Hutchy defender resulting in a penalty - up stepped Inglis to rifle past the helpless Lessells.

McGuiness finally got onto the score sheet herself on 69 minutes. Some neat play from the Accies midfield found Gardiner who slipped McGuiness through to hammer one high into the net sending Accies 5-1 up.

Hutchie themselves got another consolation 10 minutes from time following a deflected clearance in the Accies box after a corner.

Manager Gary Doctor was pleased with the sides reaction to recent defeats:

"I'm really pleased for the team to win today.

"The girls showed real spirit and determination to get back on track after a disappointing spell. We were much more like ourselves and are getting back to what made us strong early in the season. We have two long away trips now and need to show the same level of determination and quality on those games"

Accies travel away to Buchan next week in the SWPL.

Accies: Fleming (GK), Inglis, McGill, Allan, Quinn (Lindsay 45), McLeod (McCann 67), Kerr, Jaycock, McGuiness, Gardiner (Smith 72), Lyle (Gallen 80)

A dramatic Deborah McLeod header in the dying minutes sealed a thrilling 2-1 win for Accies as the SWPL 2 enters it final round of fixtures.

With the game poised to end in a stalemate, the midfielder thumped the ball home from a Gill Inglis cross after she had got free on the right hand side.

"I couldn’t believe it was me of all people," the 20 year old said after the game.

"I just don’t score goals!" she added.

Accies started the match like a train and should really have been 5 or 6 up in the first half. Incredibly, they managed to find the same post 3 times and the bar in a 45 minute blitz on the Buchan goal.

Laura Gallen and Lori Gardner both had efforts hit the upright and several other chances were spurned by the Accies front line as the Hamilton side totally dominated proceedings.

The deadlock was finally broken with a tremendous curling strike from Katherine Jaycock. Getting a quick throw to feet some 30 yards out, she shifted the ball to her right foot and curled and unstoppable effort into the top corner. Minutes later it could have gotten even better for her as she hit another curler from almost the exact same position which hit the inside of the post and agonisingly rolled along the line.

Fleming was finally called into action just after with an unbelievable save tipping a shot onto her own post. Accies rallied and hit the woodwork for the 4th time with Amie McGill crashing an effort off the bar.

For all the dominated possession and chances though, the unthinkable happened straight after half time - Buchan scored.

After forcing a corner straight from kick off, a splendid delivery saw Zoe Smart guide one into the top of the net stunning the visitors. After a scrappy 10 minutes, Accies were again dominating the ball and were rarely threatened but Buchan's defence stood firm until the dramatic late winner from McLeod.

Manager Gary Doctor, while not ruling out a title charge, was realistic in what the team need to do.

"We've bounced back with two wins to give ourselves an outside chance. Everything must go into winning one game at a time and see what happens.

"I'm delighted to get the win, it was nice to get the late winner for a change!"

Doctor went on to credit the application of his players for the 90 minutes and seeing the game through to the death.

"In the first half I think we created more chances than any other half this season, I don’t know how it was only 1-0 (at halftime).

"Because we hadn't scored more it kept Buchan in the game and they took advantage but credit to the players, they kept going and in the end

ground them down.

"It was also really good to see the goals come from different sources with KJ and Debs scoring for the first time this season.

"We've been challenging midfielders to chip in and take the pressure off and they've picked a good time to do it."

Accies next match is away to Inverness on August 28th.

Hamilton Accies had a happy trip home from the Highland Capital with a runaway 6-1 victory over Inverness City.
With a Marie Terese Gardner hattrick, a Lori Gardner effort, and Gillian Inglis and Amy Anderson penalties, manager Gary Doctor said he was happy to see a range of goals going into a week’s break.
“I think MT has been due a few goals, obviously the first was a mistake from the keeper but she had to be there to take advantage of that, so I suppose that’s the not of luck that we’ve not had in games,” he began.
“I was really pleased for Lori to score because she’d been getting a few chances and I think she was beating herself up a bit, and the second goal was crucial to take the game away from them and was probably the most important. And Amy Anderson had an outstanding game, she was everywhere making chances and was really threatening.”
It only took Accies eight minutes to break the deadlock, albeit through an Inverness mistake. After Anderson’s through ball looked  to be too heavy and made its way straight to keeper Kim Jappy, the keeper held at ground with ease. A lapse in concentration saw Jappy spill however, seeing McGuinness pounce to steal and knock into the open goal.
Five minutes ahead of the break though, Elaine Fleming was called into action with a crucial save, palming away Natalie Bodium’s spinning effort to keep Hamilton ahead going into the break.
Accies finally found a way through twelve minutes into the second, as McGuinness turned turns provider to bomb down the right flank to pick out Gardner in the middle who beat Jappy with her first time shot.
And only a minute later it was three, courtesy of Inglis’ spot kick, following a suspect challenge on McGuinness in the area from Jappy.
McGuinness was back on target after more positive play from Accies, latching onto a great pass from Mhairi Lyle, drawing the onrushing Jappy out and bringing her down before turning and spinning her effort in, before completing her hattrick three minutes later rounding the keeper to finish on the 74th.
And a minute later Anderson opened her account from the spot placing it into Jappy’s right after riding the challenge to win the penalty making it six.
With four left to play, Jana Brady netted a consolation for the hosts with a silky finish, but the damage was done as Accies made it three wins on the bounce to bring all three points back to Hamitlon.

Moving into the last five games of the season, Hamilton Accies Women kept the pressure on league leaders Glasgow Girls with a comprehensive 6-0 win over Jeanfield Swifts.
Lori Gardner's quickfire double in the opening stages along with Amy Anderson's effort gave Gary Doctor's women a comfortable 3-0 lead going into the break before goals from Deborah McLeod, Marie Terese McGuinness and Mhairi Lyle completed the rout.
And manager Doctor couldn't rate his side highly enough.
He said; "As the cliche goes, we're just taking it one game at a time and the next game becomes the most important, and that's what we've been preaching to the players.
"In the last week or two we've seen a definite up in the intensity of training, the players have been brilliant lately and today was probably as well as we've played in a long time.
"We've not had a cleansheet in a while, but as a team today, every area played extremely well, never gave any chances away, didn't get sloppy, and some of our work rate was phenomenal," he added.
McGuinness seen two chances inch just wide of either post in the first minute, but Hamilton didn't have to due them for long as Gardner opened the scoring only five minutes later. After great countering from McGuinness, she found Gardner near the area, who despite initially losing the ball, won it back before driving into the box and placing it right past Corrie McIlravey. And less than a minute later she completed her brace turning in McGuinness' cross from close range.
Anderson completed the first half run with her lob over McIlravey with six until the break, before McLeod headed in brilliantly at the back post from a Gillian Inglis corner just before the hour mark.
McGuinness made it five after driving into the box and hooking her shot around the onrushing McIlravey ten later and Lyle got her reward with three left to play knocking in Susie Smith's cross from the left to complete the rout.
Next up for Accies is a free weekend before heading to Lesser Hampden to face Queen's Park.
