One goal separates Hamilton and Stirling again

A brilliant display and final push for Accies wasn’t enough as manager Gary Doctor praised his side’s attitude and fight.

Rachel Donaldson grabbed one in each half for the visitors while Gillian Inglis scored with five to go as it was another close encounter between the pair.

Doctor said that despite the visitors creating more, he though his Accies controlled the match, and was happy with the push to the very end.

“We played some great stuff at times, were just a bit unfortunate with the goals, first was a great volley, but I think we were well in the game, hit the post ourselves before half time, but I think we could have done more in it, and we were on top of the game in the second half even though they made more chances overall.

“They got a wee break at the corner, and I thought the game was passed us at that point, but we showed good character and fought back, got lucky with our goal, but it came from someone not giving up and making a run and it paid dividends, the attitude was first class.”

Hamilton set out well from the off, and after only seven great play saw Lauren Leslie set up outside the area, who’s shot just hooked over.

Stirling then went on to constantly threaten down the right, and Accies were let off after they switched off thinking that the ball had ran out, gifting Stirling the chance to break down the left and cut in, but Emma Lyons’ effort went wide.

Donaldson netted her first on the 24th, after a soft freekick near the edge of the box was awarded, Rebecca Blair found the clearance to send it to the back post for Donaldson to volley in.

Accies had chances around the half hour, Inglis playing in Megan Quiggley in the box who couldn’t reach it, before Megan Quinn hit Inglis’ short corner just over.

After a poor touch for Stirling’s Ashley McDonald, Inglis broke into the box one on one with the keeper cracking her strike off the far post, before Elaine Fleming pulled off a great stop to deny Donaldson’s shot across her body at the other end.

Hamilton were in trouble on the hour, Emma Lyons handled in front of the box, but it was Deborah McLeod who was booked for dissent giving the visitors a freekick in the dangerous area, but it was laid back and struck high to keep it 1-0.

Three later though, Donaldson blasted in Jade Gallon’s corner to make it two.

The New Douglas Park side pushed hard to find a way back, with Inglis nearly chipping Chloe Logan who easily caught, but with five of normal to go, a great through ball from Quinn found the fullback who struggled slightly with the defender but smashed her shot in.

The hosts fired from all cylinders in the closing stages, but it was too little too late as they now look to next week’s trip to Hearts.
